View Blog - Search Engine Friendliness

Posted by: Allen - April 28, 2010
The phrase "search engine friendly" (SEF) describes specific web site design techniques, content management systems, shopping carts, and other elements that have been optimized for the purpose of better search engine ranking.  Optimizing a website typically involves editing a site's HTML "code" as well as its "content" to both increase its friendliness to specific key phrases and to remove obstacles to the indexing "spiders" deployed by search engines.

One SEF technique is to use "friendly URLs", sometimes known as "short URLs", or "fancy URLs". Here is an example. This URL brings up a specific page titled "About us":

http://www.bandwise.com/page.php?s=2

The following "friendly URL" version brings up the same "About us" page:

http://www.bandwise.com/aboutus

The latter is obviously more descriptive and... well....friendly.  Imagine a page titled www.bandwise.com/special-offer.  That is much easier to promote, or advertise, or rattle off over the phone compared to its cryptic counterpart. But not only that, the friendly URL may remain good even if you switch webserver platforms or ISPs.  In other words, lets say you switch your real URL to this new and different URL for whatever reason:

http://www.bandwise.com/static.php?s=2

Notice how this brings up the very same "About us" webpage even though it says "static.php" rather than "page.php". Friendly URLs (made possible through webserver "rewrite engines") allow you to maintain consistency in your website year after year, no matter what changes you want to make to your website's technology or service provider.  If Google has taken the time and trouble to spider your site with..oh say...1000 of your webpages, can you count on  Google spidering it all over again from scratch just because you switch to a new platform, shopping cart, or Internet Service Provider?  Every site has an "about us" page right?  Why should that URL ever change even if you change your website?  It shouldn't and there is no reason for it to ever change.

So when building, updating, or maintaining your current website, don't lose sight of "friendly URLs" which are yet another important aspect of your overall SEO plan. Let me be crystal clear. Your top 10 URLs should never change, and I mean NEVER. You worked hard to increase your ranking on those pages, so never toss that away by abandoning those URLs and creating new ones that serve the exact same purpose.
